Amish White Bread

This is such a great bread. It holds together nicely and is great for sandwiches or toasted with butter or peanut butter.

I love how good my house smells after baking bread. Bread and especially my chocolate chip cookies have such wonderful aromas. That’s why real estate agents sometimes bake cookies before an open house. The smell of home!

This bread recipe is also great for beginner bread makers. Basically, just make sure to follow the recipe exactly as it states and you won’t have any problems. As always, if you have any questions, please send me a note and I’ll answer as soon as possible.

Amish White Bread

This is an easy-to-follow bread recipe, and the taste is outstanding!
Prep time: 15 MinCook time: 25 MinInactive time: 2 HourTotal time: 2 H & 40 M

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (between 100° F and 110° F or 38 C and 43 C)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1.5 Tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Pour warm water into a large bowl and stir in the yeast, sugar, and oil. Let sit for about 10 minutes to activate the yeast.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  3. Once the yeast has bubbled, gradually mix in the flour and salt mixture to the yeast mixture using a stand mixture with a dough hook attachment on medium speed. You can also hand mix the dough using a sturdy wooden spoon. Add in about 2 cups at a time until all flour has been added.
  4. Continue to mix the dough for about another 2 minutes until fully incorporated.
  5. Remove the dough from the bowl and place on a lightly floured surface and knead the dough using the folding method for about a minute.
  6. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into a well-oiled large bowl. I use olive oil for this. Turn the dough around in the bowl so that all sides are covered with oil.
  7. Cover and let rise for about 1 to 2 hours. Dough should have doubled in size.
  8. Remove dough from bowl and place on a floured surface and knead for another 2 minutes. Cut the dough in half and shape into 2 loaves.
  9. Place the dough into well-oiled loaf pans (9" x 5") and cover for 30-40 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350° F and place loaves in oven once it has reached the correct temperature. Bake for approximately 25 - 30 minutes.
  11. The breads are done when the tops are medium golden brown and tapping on the top gives off a hollow sound.
  12. Place on wire rack to cool. Wait approximately 40 minutes before slicing into the bread. Cutting into the bread before it's had time to cool may lead to the bread drying out by the next day.
  13. Enjoy your homemade bread!
